In nature, most deeds are mutually performed in selfishness. Even taking a dive for nine cousins is a greedy endeavor in the eyes of the abacus. This does not mean that “chivalry is dead”. There are few instances of selflessness in which creatures give to those that would not provide any direct or genetic benefit. This strategy relies in the act of reciprocation. A giver will only give if the giver and receiver:

1) Are in cahoots.

2) Future Reciprocation is likely

3) Remembering the action of giving and who gave it helps

4) Failure to Reciprocate is Punishable

Now, consider how we as human beings fit within these rules of reciprocal treatment of one another. Our are ability to remember such facts, figures, places, things, and even the consideration of the non-corporeal have made us a prime candidate for these interactions. So much so that sometimes the other rules seem to us irrelevant. For example, when you last given an anonymous donation, why did you choose the charity? Was it likely that they would reciprocate, or was the thought of being in a position where reciprocation was needed so troubling that support appeared the only responsible choice.

Alternatively, when was the last time you were angered when a stranger failed to reciprocate (eg. cut in line)? When was the last time you were so angered at such failure that you took action? Although we should not be surprised at a stranger’s failure to reciprocate, we have established a grand network of altruistic cues which we expect others to follow, no matter how many interactions have previously been made.
